About the book

About First, Nobody Gets Hurt

Most companies run safety from one slide at the back of the board pack: a rate nobody upstairs reads, slogans on the wall, and a program that starts over after every serious injury. A plant that can’t keep its people safe can’t keep a process stable either. The injuries, the overtime, the scrap and the turnover come from the same few jobs.

First, Nobody Gets Hurt applies 80/20 thinking to harm. Find the few jobs that do most of the damage, by count and by cost, and screen every event for the potential to kill or maim. Fix the work instead of retraining the worker. Hear about the near miss before the injury. Read every recordable within a day, with a root cause inside three days, and put three numbers on page one of the board pack every month: the recordable rate, the experience mod and the near misses.

The book follows Kessling Fabricating & Coatings, an invented company with two plants and 640 people, for a thousand days: from a recordable rate of 6.8 to 2.1 in two years, with near-miss reports up from 12 a year to 710 and a $4.4 million EBITDA gain its CFO signed line by line. Your team does the work in First, Nobody Gets Hurt · The Field Guide.

“This book is part of the few business books that have changed my life. Even though the 80/20 principles are simple, implementing 80/20 can be challenging, but Bill shares how he did it multiple times, the obstacles he faced, and how to make the changes stick.”

“How do we improve the way work gets done?” Every day

How to use it

Start with the harm Pareto: rank the injuries by count and by cost, and screen every event for the potential to kill or maim. Fix the work on the few jobs that matter, make the near-miss card the easiest report in the plant and read every recordable within a day. Work the Field Guide’s thirty-six worksheets with the plant manager, the safety lead and the shift supervisors, and put three numbers on page one of the board pack.
