About the book

About The Strategy Management Process

Your board doesn't want a vision. It wants a plan it can sign.

Most strategy dies in the binder. The plan is written, presented, and admired, and by March nobody in the building can recite it. The Strategy Management Process is the fix: six phases, six weeks, one artifact a week, ending in a boardroom with a signature — from a team that signed first.

Situation. Framework. Business Plan. Deployment. Cadence. Boardroom. Each phase produces one page a director could read in ten minutes, and each page is the raw material for the next. Then the same six phases stretch across the calendar year and the thousand days of a private-equity hold, so the number stays likely every year after.

The whole process runs on one company — Ironwood Process Components, five plants, nine hundred people, fourteen months into a sponsor's hold — with every number reconciled from the first chapter to the last. You need a number, a date, eight people, six weeks, and the willingness to say no in writing.

“This book is part of the few business books that have changed my life. Even though the 80/20 principles are simple, implementing 80/20 can be challenging, but Bill shares how he did it multiple times, the obstacles he faced, and how to make the changes stick.”

“Bill Canady does not treat leadership as a collection of motivational slogans. Instead, he presents a practical framework for understanding why some organizations execute well while others struggle.”

Before you choose

For the team building the plan.

Use this book when a strategy has to become a plan the leadership team owns and the board can review. The six-week sequence produces an artifact at each phase, rather than stopping at a presentation.

Who is it for?

The CEO, the CFO, and the eight people who build the plan.

What can you work on?

  • Work through Situation, Framework, Business Plan, Deployment, Cadence and Boardroom as one connected planning process.
  • Build each phase’s one-page artifact from the work completed in the previous phase.
  • Connect the six-week planning cycle to the calendar year and the thousand days of a private-equity hold.

How can you use it?

  1. Follow Ironwood Process Components, the book’s worked company, through the six phases with your own number, date and planning team in mind.
  2. Use the companion Field Guide for the six artifacts, Commitment Page and working instruments as your team builds its plan.

Which option should you choose?

This book concentrates on building and committing to the plan. The Strategy Deployment Process is its companion for running that plan. The Strategy masterclass and the longer Strategy Made Simple Install are separate learning choices; neither is included in a standalone book purchase.
