The plan was signed in December. By June nobody could say which initiative was red.
That is the lost year, and most companies have one — a good plan, a board that approved it, and no rhythm underneath it to turn the signature into the number. The Strategy Deployment Process is the rhythm: policy deployment stripped to what a CEO with a number to hit actually needs. Cascade the plan one level, with the boards below. The book runs on one company — Tamarack Cold Systems, three plants and a parts-and-service business, $190 million, a board that wants $34 million of EBITDA in three years — from the day the new CEO inherits the lost year to the day the number lands.
And the idea underneath it: a year gives you eleven chances to catch a miss before it becomes the number. Most CEOs use none of them.
